Welcome to Comic Pants!
Hello and welcome to Comic Pants, the newest review blog in the Internet! As of today, at least… the Internet moves fast, and there’s probably another one opening in five… four… three… two…
At any rate, the four contributors of Comic Pants (Randy Lander, Dave Farabee, David Martindale and Nick Budd) bid you welcome and hope you like what you see. We’ll be adding content on a regular basis, including weekly rundowns of number one issues for the week (Wednesday Number Ones), group favorite picks (Hot Pants picks), Previews reviews (Down the Line) and of course, regular reviews. Our hope is that if you stop by on any given day, you’ll probably find something new. Of course, if you don’t want to keep checking back in, you can always use our handy-dandy RSS feeds.
The personality of the site will become clear over time, but the basics are this: We hope to provide solid, thoughtful review content with a sense of humor to back it up. Two of our contributors have been at this for 10 years and 5 years, respectively, while the other two are fresh voices, and we hope that mix of experience and enthusiasm will offer something you all want to hear.
Please feel free to chime in on the comments on reviews, as we’d love feedback on anything and everything, and thanks for checking in!

The site looks great, guys. I’m looking forward to spending plenty of time here.

QuoteAaaaaaaaan I’m a tool. Excellent double and now triple post!

QuoteOkay, I give up. Your interface is screwing with me.

QuoteYou have to have at least one post approved by a mod before your posts go up automatically. I deleted your double post, but I like the idea of you calling yourself a tool, so I’m leaving that.

QuoteHey guys! Congrats on the mention on blog.newsarama.com VERY early this morning! The Capital City’s power is now growing exponentially on the internet! Time for the world to see that all the good minds are in Texas

QuoteCongratulations to you Pants guys! I’m ready to get Pantsed. Let’s all get Pantsed! P.S. Dave, the other guys told me to tell you to forget about the severance pay from AICN Comics. For the record, I was in favor of you getting what you’re owed, but THEY took it and spent it at a…uh…gentlemen’s club.
29 Aug 2006 at 2:36 pm
QuoteNo sweat, Buzz. I made a stop off at the AICN liquor cabinet before I went, so I’ve got all the severance I need.
Oh, and about the new joint - I see you’ve already availed yourself of a pantsing courtesy of our staff, but I can’t help but notice you’re not wearing any underwear. I know we all picked up some bad habits from Knowles, but…even just a loincloth would be nice…

QuoteHey guys. Love the sight and love the reviews, but is there any chance of you guys giving some form of numerical score? It’s just one more way for me to understand whether you think something is good or not (and how good).

QuoteExcellent! I’ve been on the lookout for a dedicated reviews site for a while now. I always enjoyed Mr. Lander’s reviews over at thefourthrail (RIP), wheter I agreed with them or not!
30 Aug 2006 at 2:40 pm
QuoteYeah, the Fourth Rail was always an awesome sight. I found that I often agreed with Randy’s reviews in regard the quality of a particular book, but arrived at that opinion for completely different reasons.

QuoteHey, is there any chance you guys will cover the Marvel Essentials and DC Showcases and keep us updated on stuff put out on those lines? That would be cool. I hear they have a new ESSENTIAL POWER MAN comin’ out or something.
30 Aug 2006 at 5:49 pm
QuoteMan, those ESSENTIAL volumes are a *beast* to review. (I don’t have to tell you, you’ve reviewed some of them at AICN).
I mean, I love them, I buy every Spider-Man volume and I’ve got Vol. 7 of Spidey and the Moon Knight book on my shelf, but it’s usually months after they come out when I finally finish reading them. I’ll probably review them at some point, but I don’t have the fortitude for many mighty Essential reviews.
I actually haven’t been as big on DC’s Showcase volumes, except for the Jonah Hex book, which was fantastic. But I keep hoping for another Showcase that’ll get my attention. I know Dave F was all over the Showcase Metamorpho.
30 Aug 2006 at 7:43 pm
QuoteThe Showcase Metamorpho was a hoot! As you know, there have been some online fan rumblings for a Showcase Suicide Squad, now that’s one I’d really like to see.

QuoteI’ve heard that rumor too and I for one am all for it. Though, I did just go buy the first 20 issues of the run the other day. Great spy stuff from Ostrander and really, who can’t like a team that has Deadshot, Bronze Tiger and freakin’ Captain Boomerang?
30 Aug 2006 at 9:59 pm
QuoteDammit, Buzz, you want Essentials reviewed? I get every single one that comes out. Why didn’t you say so? Let’s talk…

QuoteLook forward to seeing ‘em, Dan. Hope you review ESSENTIAL FF VOL. 5 and ESSENTIAL MTU VOL. 2 (be extra kind of Spider-Man and Nighthawk, featuring Nighthawk’s sweet sucker punching of Spidey at the end. I’m telling ya, ya want Batman ya cast Christian Bale. Ya want Nighthawk, ya cast Hayden Christiansen or James Franco; also Spidey and the Frankenstein Monster was the one that made me a regular comic reader).
Randy, I think when it comes to reviewing the ESSENTIALS, all it takes is an understanding of the character and the era. I wouldn’t expect anyone to read all 800 pages for a review. It’s sort of more about the theme for me. A lot of times, I’d be so familiar with the issues, I wouldn’t have to re-read ‘em. Original Spiderman vs. Spiderclone. No sweat. Tie me in a burlap bag, throw me in the deep end of a swimming pool, I can tell ya all about those stories. Xavier’s Dream in early X-MEN? I know that better than I know the events in my own life. I like to learn what reviewers feel about the characters and their books rather than the books themselves.

QuoteWhen it comes to the Essentials, in general I like the more obscure stuff rather than what most would consider classics. I mean, I’m glad that Spider-Man, Avengers, etc. are getting their due, but give me something weird and cool like Essential Godzilla or the Essential monster stuff that Marvel has been doing, and I’m all over it. Too much of Marvel’s weird ’70s output is relegated to dusty back issue bins, and I’d love to see more of it, as I missed most of it and learned about it in the Official Handbooks. I’d love to see the original stories that those whacked-out characters spun from.

QuoteESSENTIAL GODZILLA ruled. The book was much better than any of us little shoplifters gave it credit for being at the time. I just finished ESSENTIAL KILLRAVEN. God, that was a good series. Too good for its’ time. Reading ESSENTIAL WEREWOLF BY NIGHT now, which is some very mature comic writing (in spots), very much ahead of its’ time. I’d love to see ESSENTIAL MORBIUS and the pornographically named ESSENTIAL MAN-THING.
