Down the Line is our monthly look at Previews, and what titles are coming out a few months, well, “down the line.”

This installment covers the February Previews for comics due to ship out in April 2007. Remember, especially with the indy books, that pre-ordering is your friend, and the best way to make sure you get the books you want. I should mention, thanks to the increasing prevalence of advance solicitation, that several of the books here won’t actually ship until May or later, but the preorders are still due by the end of February.

I’ve been off and on this title for a while now, but #36 is definitely a stand out issue for the series. The reason: no Cable. This Deadpool solo issue is a great example of why Cable should be dropped from Cable & Deadpool. It has quirky humor, fun action, very little respect for the fourth wall, and at no point takes itself too seriously. Without Cable pulling down the fun factor of the book, you can almost forget that the book takes place in the oh-so-dark and increasingly EXTREME Marvel 616. Sometimes comic books should be funny books, and Cable & Deadpool does a pretty decent job at it.

Pirates of Coney Island is the natural inheritor of the title “best angry anti-establishment youth comic” from Rick Spears’ previous effort, Teenagers From Mars. Spears brings together a gritty, realistic look at the life of young juvenile delinquents, but he flavors it with heavy doses of crazy characters, outrageous car chases and style that most real young punks probably can’t muster. Spears’ wild ideas have already found a natural mate in the anarchic art of Rob G, but Vasilis Lolos is just as simpatico, with an edgy punk look reminiscent of Becky Cloonan and Amazing Joy Buzzards‘ Dan Hipp and Continue Reading »

This headline should have appeared somewhere on the cover, maybe replacing the Justice, Like Lightning… bit that feels more like one of Warren Ellis’ jokes rather than an applicable statement. It’s been there since the beginning (during the Busiek and Bagley days) but this time out, with this more outlandish team, does it still ring true? The JSA gets a new start and a new title as Justice Society of America, and the book has gone from being good to being great. It would be close to impossible to not compare it to the concurrent relaunch of the JLA as Justice League of America, but despite being the lower profile of the two titles, it has been by far the more accomplished, just not the more recognized, of the relaunches. Geoff Johns rightly stays on the title and Dale Eaglesham takes over on pencils.
