Fat Pants is a monthly Comic Pants feature in which we mull over the last month’s trades and graphic novels in order to let you know which ones we feel are most worth your attention. It is far from a comprehensive list of all the good reads to published in the past month, so please feel free let us know in the comments which trades and graphic novels came out in the last month that you, the reader, feel are most worth our attention. So, without further adieu, here are the books we think really stood out this month.

We here at Comic Pants hear there’s a movie about Spider-Man or something coming out soon, so now’s as good a time as any to talk about the webslinger. Panteon members Randy Lander, D3 (Dave Martindale), Dan Grendell, Dave Farabee, and Nick Budd, newly recovered from his recent assault by Girls Gone Wild, discuss a number of aspects of Spidey’s career, comics and otherwise. This is the first in a new podcasting experiment for us, as we split our long podcasts in two and give you half each week instead of the entire thing biweekly. This week’s Spidey talk covers each Panteon member’s take on the Continue Reading »

Some of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

Wednesday Number Ones is a weekly feature here at Comic Pants. We take the books that are premiering a first issue from that week and give a quick opinion on them. From time to time we may also include more than issue number ones in this feature. If a noteworthy one-shot or the first issue of a new story arc is released, we may talk about it in this feature. Note: Sorry about the delay, folks… server difficulties postponed the posting until late afternoon.
This week we will cover Amazons Attack #1 of 6, Hunter’s Moon #1, Johnny Hiro #1, The Ride: Savannah One Shot, and Star Trek Klingons Blood Will Tell #1.

This just in! Nick Budd is not in this podcast, as he was savagely beaten by a roving group of Girls Gone Wild. Instead, it’s up to Randy Lander, D3 (Dave Martindale), Dan Grendell, Dave Farabee, and special guest Paul Benjamin (author of manga Pantheon High and upcoming series Marvel Adventures: Hulk, former editor of Humanoids, and sexy supermodel) to tackle the thorny topic of manga. They open with the topics on everyone’s mind- panty shots and boy love- and move on to discuss anything and everything, from how Continue Reading »

Writer: Jay Faerber
Artist: Mahmud A. Asrar
Company: Image Comics
Jay Faerber’s newest manifestation of the superhero team paradigm, found here in the pages of Dynamo 5, has the right to be compared to many things that have come before it in comic book history. It’s a team book of the highest fashion, fitting in with the likes of a hip Fantastic Four or Justice League of America that provides not only an abundance of thrilling action but also nails the group dynamic in a swanky and addictive fashion. So yes, Dynamo 5 can be compared to those things, can be put into the class of an excellent team book that everyone should give a shot…but for me, I equate the title to being like a really good Continue Reading »

Writer/Artist: Ben Templesmith
Company: IDW Publishing
Though I’ve enjoyed some of what he’s done, I wasn’t really what you’d call a diehard Ben Templesmith fan. Until I read Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, which really seems like some sort of peak in the artistic sensibilities he’s been developing, and now I find myself anxious to hunt down his art book, Tommyrot, his sci-fi project Singularity 7 and the rest of the 30 Days of Night books. But enough about me… let’s talk about sentient maggots who save the world on a regular basis. It will come as no surprise to anyone reading Wormwood that Templesmith is a collaborator with Warren Ellis, as Continue Reading »
