Top Five Fridays 4/27/07
Some of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”
Also, just as the Wednesday Number Ones feature is generally our spot for folks to talk about the comics of the week, we hope that Top Five Fridays is where you’ll come to talk about what’s going on in comics in general. News in the comics world, thoughts on comics you’ve recently read, talk about comic-related movies that release this weekend and more are welcome in the comments thread for Top Five Fridays.
This week, the Top Five Books of the Moment are:
Nick Budd
- 52

David Martindale (D3)

Should I be picking up Fantastic Four then? They’re pretty much my favorite characters at Marvel but I’ve been avoiding it because of the bad aftertaste of Civil War. Not to keen on Storm and the Black Panther joining either.

Quote1. Fantastic Four - McDuffie’s really hit his stride now. Great character interaction, some cool action moments and some really funny moments thrown in for good measure. Pelletier is the perfect guy to be drawing it also. A truly “fantastic” issue and one of the best I’ve read this year.
2. Daredevil - Excellent as always.
3. Powers - To be honest, the only reason this here is cause I only got 3 books this week. Solid but not a patch on what it used to be. Great cover and art from Oeming though
Cool Iron Man movie photo here too if anyone’s interested:

QuoteHey, Dave, you’re finally getting around the Push Man and Other Stories? That and Abandon the Old in Tokyo are two of my favorite graphic novels of the last few years, if not my favorites. What do you think? (Aside from liking it, obviously)

QuoteHere’s the deal from my point of view. I was hesitant to try the title because of Civil War’s aftertaste and the introduction of Storm and Black Panther to the title. Despite those things, McDuffie writes a fantastic superhero book. It’s action packed, fast paced, has great dialogue. McDuffie’s creative use of powers is something that I’ve been missing in my superhero books for a long time. My only real complaint is that it could have been even better with the original roster.

QuoteMe, I like Storm and Black Panther. So it isn’t Sue and Reed? So what. It’s been made clear that this is just while they work their crap out, and the Royal Couple are a good substitution for a while. It’s a cool changeup for a bit. They aren’t meant as replacements, so I just enjoy ‘em as the cool characters they are in some fun McDuffie stories. Reed and Sue will be back in time.

QuoteI’m with Dan on this one. Yeah, it’s a little weird that Panther and Storm have become a sort of bantering cute couple, which isn’t quite in line with their past characterizations, but it’s not wildly out of character either. And it’s fun. Storm’s use of her powers against the Surfer, and Panther *riding the surfboard* were two of the many cool moments in the issue.
Honestly, I like Reed and Sue well enough, but as far as I’m concerned, if McDuffie is going to write at this level, we can keep Panther and Storm around for good. The new FF throws down with the Silver Surfer, who’s gone back to being a lapdog for Galactus. Doesn’t get much better than that, especially when it’s being done by McDuffie and Pelletier.
As for the rest of my top five: Johnny Hiro is awesomeness in comic book form. It may be over-selling to compare it to Scott Pilgrim, and it’s definitely a different sort of genre appreciation, but I think that in some ways, Johnny Hiro is on the same level.
Daredevil has another solid issue, and I love that Brubaker and Lark have him fighting street crime while he monologues, rather than sitting in a room talking to Foggy or himself. And what’s up with Gladiator? Dying to know.
Usagi Yojimbo features a faceoff between a wicked assassin using an innocent for leverage and Usagi, and shows off the hero’s principles, his skills and Sakai’s penchant for tragedy.
Runaways Vol 7 is a bit of a cheat, since it was a light week for me and I haven’t read it yet… but I have read all the issues contained therein, and it’s worthy of the number five spot.
