Comic Pants Podcast #26

yotsuba.jpgCheck back in for the second half of our podcast on comics projects the Panteon is looking forward to. Once again Randy Lander, Nick Budd, D3 (David Martindale), and Dan Grendell talk about two upcoming books each is interested in. What’s on the horizon? What has caught our eye? From popular books to obscure stuff, each member sounds off, except Dave Farabee, who has finished sorting his hate mail from John Byrne and is busy replying to it. Of course, we all have different tastes, so let us know in the comments what upcoming comics have you excited!

It looks like response was pretty much in favor of the shorter, weekly podcasts, so we’re going to keep that as our new standard. If a topic is too hard to split into two, we may occasionally do a single longer one, but we don’t expect that to happen often.

As always, commentary is welcomed and encouraged. Let us know what you thought of the podcast, and if you have suggestions for future podcast topics, leave us a comment or write in to the show! Listeners who write in could win cool comics with each broadcast! Please drop us a line at comicpantsfeedback@gmail.com to give us some questions or comments for the next show.

Do you recommend anything with brian wood’s name on the cover or just some of his stuff?

Don’t know about the panteon (though I could guess), but I would personally recommend just about anything with Brian Wood’s name on the cover (with the caveat that I have yet to read Demo or Channel Zero).

He is one of those writers that has really proven, for me at least, that he can write fantastic stories. Demo was really my first outing, which is still one of my favorites…Though DMZ might just beat it.

So yeah, Brian Wood could probably say that he was going to do a series that had giant mutant cockroaches battling against the reanimated corpses of Albert Einsten and Abraham Lincoln, and I would whole-heartedly shell out the three bucks in order to read it. That’s how good of a writer he is. :)

i absolutely love previews, and by that i mean the diamond catalog. i love comics, but i look forward to the catalog more than any other thing each month. i have to say, down the line is my favorite comic commentary. it is like looking forward to christmas every month. but as far as page previews of a comic, i like seeing some dialogue free art, especially with relatively unknown artist. but i try to avoid them for books i am already reading. but you guys have to understand that your website is a huge preview. although i read reviews of stuff i read to gage a reviewer’s taste compared to my own, i just can’t afford to just try everything that looks interesting, so i use sites like yours to judge what to buy.

I would gladly pay for any book written by Brian Wood without any prior knowledge of it whatsoever. I have on rare occasion found his work to be merely above average, but it’s usually very, very good.

As Nick alluded, Wood isn’t just one kind of writer. He’s produced some excellent slice of life, action, and political commentary books, and he doesn’t seem to be weaker or stronger in any particular genre. My particular favorites happen to be projects currently in progress: DMZ and Local.

I can’t say that every issue of every series written by Wood is excellent, but I’ve never read a complete work by Wood that, as a whole, failed to deliver.

And do you think local is going to be collected in a nice hardcover or something? I don’t know if i should hunt down every issue or not. Anyway, I love DMZ and I’m goind to try out some more Brian Wood stuff. And I agree with preston hayes, I too use your site as a guide about what to buy and what not. (also down the line is precious for us foreigners because I get my stuff strictly by ordering it when it comes in the previews catalogue).

I just started listening and I’m sure you’ve seen the DC solicits by now, but the 52 covers hardcover is in there.

Nope, you’re most definitely not the only one stoked about a new Metal Men project. Not only that but DC just solicited a Metal Men Showcase that I’m dying to read, though I know it’s going to be uber-cheesy.
