Name That Feature!

manga-vs-panty.jpg
We here at Comic Pants like to hear what you think about changes we make to the site. You’ve asked for more manga content, so here it is- a new monthly column, like unto our Fat Pants column, but dealing strictly with manga released each month. What struck our fancy? What did we think was a good read? What new and cool ideas appeared this month in books read backwards? Of course, we can’t read everything, but we’re sure gonna try. And by we, I really mean me, because aside from the occassional bit of chipping in, this baby’s all mine.

All that remains, then, is to name the damn thing. So, I once again took a cue from Fat Pants. Only this time, we have a poll system in place, and we can take more accurate count. There’s two options: the reader-picked “Manga Zubon”, and the more exciting (and a little creepy) “Panty Shots.” Ladies and gentlemen, the poll is open! Name… That… Feature!

This just in: Due to your feedback, the contest is between Manga Zubon and Panty Shots. We can’t really change the poll easily, so if Manga Pants wins in the poll, Manga Zubon will be the new name.

What Comic Pants feature is most important to you?

I see that “Panty Shots” is winning, but I voted for “Manga Pants.” I hope you go with that one, if only because “Panty shots” is a really sterotypical name for it. That’d be like if you ran a feature that covered indies, Vertigo, comic strips and all sorts of comics and gave it a superhero themed name.

Maybe you could come up with something fun and creative that isn’t on the poll, but for the love of God please don’t name it “Panty Shots.”

  3. Since ‘Panty Shots’ is a bit one-sided and limiting (but indeed a lot more fun)…I guess ‘Manga Pants’…but that IS indeed dull…

    Maybe a third option?

MANGA ZUBON!!! (Zubon = pants in Japanese)

Yes, I’m already getting used to it…it’s got a nice ring to it.

    GO ‘MANGA ZUBON’!!!!

    Ok, I’ll stop now….

Eh.. I’d say neither. Panty shots is a bit creepy and manga pants sounds a little jump-the-sharkish. Neither hast the fun-luvin’ pizazz of your other column names.

Every thought of having a contest to name the manga column. A sort of winning entry gets a prize? Could do the same for the picture.

ooooh, “Manga Zubon” has indeed got a nice ring to it. AND it’s fun to say, without the creepiness factor.

  8. The poll choices are either a bit… Off or boring.
My vote goes to the very fitting: MANGA ZUBON!

There’s no alternative, when you think about it. ;)

Panty shots. It’s fun, it matches the rest of the naming scheme, and it’s the perfect little dig at the damn japanophiles. Nothing against manga, I’ve read my fair share, but the guys who think anything Japanese is better than American stuff sicken me. Worse than emo and scenester kids.

panty shots is a big turn-off, Manga pants is a little better.

I find panty shots conjures up everything I hate about manga and anime.

Manga is more pleasant and encompasses a bigger set of comics

  12. I agree with most of the above. I think Panty Shots is clever but it demeans what you’re trying to do. It also doesn’t let the casual reader of your site know what the column is about and could turn off new readers.

Now how about a contest for us to choose whether it’s going to be D3 or Dave Martindale, cuz frankly, I don’t see the point of using both. It’s not like Spider-Man signs all his notes, “courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man (Peter Parker).”

I like Manga Zubon, too. I’m certainly open to other suggestions like that, and you all seem more into that name than either of the two we provided. I suspect people are voting for Manga Pants mostly because they don’t want Panty Shots, not because they like it, so here’s the deal; if Manga Pants wins, I’ll call it Manga Zubon instead.

As long as it isn’t Yaoi Pants, I can live with it.

I actually voted for Panty Shots, because it seemed the wittier of the two, but I can see how it might cause problems with casual readers. Manga Pants seems a bit dull, but I think Manga Zubon might be confusing to people who are new to the site.

    Here are my alternatives:

    1.) Lost In Pants-lation
    2.) Imported from Ja-pants

Or you know, maybe you could use “Manga Pants” for the longer reviews and “Panty Shots” for the shorter ones…

Dan–I’m so glad you’ll be doing this! Unfortunately I voted for Panty Shots mostly as a reaction against the really generic Manga Pants but I think Manga Zubon is the way to go.

I voted for Manga Pants mostly because Panty Shots sounds horrible. Some other suggestions off the top of my head:

Nippants - combines Nippon with pants (duh)

    Rising Sun Pants

    Godzilla Pants

    Go MANGA ZUBON!!! Heh.

Well only some fifteen or so people have spoken up so far, there’s been 115 votes, those who hate panty shots have simply been more vocal. I voted for Manga Pants myself, like others to vote against panty shots, that said it obviously has its fans.

Yes, obviously. It IS pretty funny…just not very representative. None of the manga I’ve read have ever had a panty-shot in them. Maybe Ghost In The Shell, but that’s it, I think.

Lost In Pants-lation - that rocks. Stirs up thoughts of Japan, all that crazy Japanese weirdness found in Manga, and extends that crazy pants humor to something other a new type of pants.

    Two big thumbs up.

As a variation one of Hellhound’s suggestions, how about…

    “It Came From Japants”

Huh?? Get it? From ya pants? It’s also a song by the Von Bondies. Yay! Awesome.

If it’s going to be a song title, then we should go the Tom Waits route:

    Big in Japants

So, is this page and the home page broken for anyone but me? The graphic at the top appears to be too big and breaking the page. (Oh, and I have to scroll past the big giant pair of panties before anyone else in the office sees them.)

That would be my fault. The image was too big for the width of the column it was intended for, but it was supposed to shrink itself down to fit. I only tested it in Firefox. The shrinkie feature no workie in IE. It’s fixed now. (I’d say I was sorry for the giant panties at work…. but I’m not :D )
