Comic Pants Podcast #34

Top Six Artists of the MomentAfter a couple weeks out, we’re back. Or at least, most of us are. This time out, join David Martindale (D3), Randy Lander and Nick Budd as we revisit a favorite topic from the early podcast days of yore, the top five artists of the moment. Except that, thanks to our two-part format, it’s actually top six artists of the moment. And because it’s two parts, it’s more like top three this time. Confused yet?

As always, commentary is welcomed and encouraged. Let us know what you thought of the podcast, and if you have suggestions for future podcast topics, leave us a comment or write in to the show! Listeners who write in could win cool comics with each broadcast! Please drop us a line at comicpantsfeedback@gmail.com to give us some questions or comments for the next show.

  1. I don’t know if it’s a problem on my end, but the podcast is playing at double speed, making you all sound like fanboy cousins to Alvin and the Chipmunks. :)

I can only download like 9 seconds of it, but it plays at normal speed.

    Here’s the short explanation:
I goofed when I encoded the mp3 file. It will play at normal speed if you click the direct download link or use the subscription feed. I’ll have the file playable in the flash based inline player soon.

    Here’s the long explanation:
The inline player is flash based. Flash has doesn’t have the code necessary to play mp3 files that are not encoded at 44khz properly. This is a limitation of flash itself. I recently had to reformat my hard drive, and when I reinstalled my audio editing software, I apparently didn’t configure it to output mp3 files at 44khz. The file is encoded at 32khz. I’ll have the podcast re encoded at 44khz shortly. In the meantime, do a direct download or use the RSS feed to play the file in your own media player.

Edited to add: ok, it’s all fixed. Use the flash player if you so wish.

  5. Duncan Fegredo first came to my attention with “The Enigma.” I heartily recommend it.

Concerning women in comics - my wife’s typical quip about why women are not more popular in the comic field is this:

“Well of course not. Women are a civilizing force.”

My take on the women in comics issue is that it’s largely a matter of cultural lag. As with any generation, the superstar creators (your Grant Morrisons and Warren Ellises) come from a previous generation’s readers, and up until recently those audiences have been overwhelmingly male. With the increase in female readers in recent years, I expect down the line we’ll see more and more female creators pop up and break out. Another issue is that female readers tend to gravitate more to manga and fringe books like Oni’s and Vertigo’s catalogues. So as long as superheroes represent the barometer for a creator’s profile, the big names will be defined by that genre’s demographics.

Also on the subject of Women in Comics. When talking about women writers / artists / editors etc… there is an underlying issue. The issue is “why are there so man men in the world of comics?”.

Think about it. How many times do you hear of comic fans becoming comic creators? Mark Waid, Bendis, Kirkman, Millar…. all these guys have said that they love comics as a fan. I would think that more men find working in the comics industry more appealing than women might do.

Yet you look at other media such as novels, TV, cinema…. you’ve got women writers all over the place. Female directors are thinner on the ground perhaps but the writing talent is certainly out there.

While I’m not overly familar with Randy’s & D3’s choices (with the exception of Fegredo, whose current work on Hellboy is fantastic), Nick’s first 3 choices would be 3 of my own. I’m especially happy to see Travel Foreman on it. His work has improved in leaps & bounds over the last couple of years and he’s now one of the most distinctive & dynamic pencillers around. I really wish he was a bit quicker. Hopefully he gets a big project soon and is allowed the time to complete it.

Well I have to admit, the part where Nick (?) says “Surprise” followed by the laughing sounds pretty funny in chipmunk mode.

You can never have enough Skrull jokes. Well, maybe you can, but that kind of thing has never stopped me.

I’ll try… it’s just such a stupid idea, I mock it on an almost subconscious level. ;)

Glen, check out Guy Davis’s page. You won’t be sorry.

Oh, and you can check out some Brandon Graham here.
