Writer: Jeff Parker
Artist: Roger Cruz
Company: Marvel Comics
Jeff Parker. It’s a name that is often mentioned around the Panteon campfire, and it’s one that’s mentioned for many reasons. The main one however, the one that rises above all of the others, is that the man knows the various ins and outs of creating a story that in most every way delivers. He’s proven this level of skill time and time again with ingenious and creative titles such as his Marvel Adventures Avengers and his Agents of Atlas, but it seems that those were just a preamble to his real genius because he seems to have truly hit his stride here in the pages of X-Men First Class. Calling the book “fun” isn’t nearly descriptive enough Continue Reading »

Wednesday Number Ones is a weekly feature here at Comic Pants. We take the books that are premiering a first issue from that week and give a quick opinion on them. From time to time we may also include more than issue number ones in this feature. If a noteworthy one-shot or the first issue of a new story arc is released, we may talk about it in this feature.
This week we will cover Arsenic Lullaby Pulp Edition #1, Batman Lobo Deadly Serious #1 of 2, Bonds #1 of 4, Halo Uprising #1, Immortal Iron Fist #8, Johnny Delgado Is Dead #1, Mouse Guard Winter 1152 #1 of 6, New Battlestar Galactica Season Zero #1, Sky Sharks #1 and Stormbringers #1 of 5.

What is Rumble Pants? Well, the Panteon has decided to play at god once more. We take a few select comic characters and pit them against one another for our amusement, but we figured why keep the fun all to ourselves? So we decided on a format that would require your participation and will hopefully provide amusement for you at the same time. The format is a single elimination tournament with weekly rounds decided by you, the reader. Just keep reading to help decide the ultimate fate of some of your favorite comic characters!

After a couple weeks out, we’re back. Or at least, most of us are. This time out, join David Martindale (D3), Randy Lander and Nick Budd as we revisit a favorite topic from the early podcast days of yore, the top five artists of the moment. Except that, thanks to our two-part format, it’s actually top six artists of the moment. And because it’s two parts, it’s more like top three this time. Confused yet?
As always, commentary is welcomed and encouraged. Let us know what you thought of the podcast, and if you have suggestions for future podcast topics, leave us a comment or write in to the Continue Reading »

Some of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

Writer: Rick Spears
Artist: Chuck BB
Company: Oni Press
More than a loving homage or simply parody, Black Metal manages to be a sincere love letter to heavy metal music as well as a humorous send-up of it. In many ways, Black Metal is what the various incarnations of the KISS comics should have been. Where the KISS comics are always so damn sincere about their goofy trappings, Spears and BB provide a wink and nod to the audience that they realize that this stuff can be seen as kind of goofy, but they do it in a way that recognizes the inherent stoner cool of the whole thing, and so it’s more of a fantasy/adventure comic than a humor Continue Reading »

Writer/Artist: Vasilis Lolos
Company: Oni Press
Some books grab you. There is no rhyme or reason to why they do, they just do. Sometimes it’s a slow process, a creeping sensation that slowly leads to what is a crescendo of awesomeness that can not be denied. Or in other cases it can sometimes be like the immediate bang of a shotgun, resulting in a story that simply grabs you by the neck from the very first page, the style and substance of the book blaring like a blazing sun in a sea covered by a thick fog. The latter is what the first volume of Vasilis Lolos’ The Last Call is; it’s a story that takes hold of you from the first Continue Reading »
