2. Flash - Really enjoyed this issue. Waid really nailed the family dynamic of the Wests and really installed a sense of fun that’s sorely missing from the DCU right now but I’m unsure if this direction will continue, especially with the Countdown logo on the cover. I almost didn’t pick this up when I saw it.

I’m not sure if that little Countdown tag necessarily means anything - it’s shown up on almost all of DC’s superhero books lately.

Speaking of, DC had a fairly strong week - Booster Gold lead the pack, but Flash, Checkmate, Brave & the Bold, and Action Comics were all really good. I’m surprised that the current Action arc hasn’t gotten more love - it’s exactly what the Jimmy Olsen arc in Countdown should have been like all along.

1. Captain America - Excellent as usual. I’m really digging Brubaker’s work right now. This, Daredevil, Criminal & Iron Fist are guaranteed to go into my top 5 whenever they come out.

3. Fray - I enjoyed the first couple of issues of the recent Buffy relaunch but by issue 4 I was a bit lost due to it’s use of continuity from the TV series. A guy from my LCS recommended this to me when he heard that.
Fray has everything I enjoyed from Buffy Season 8: Great characters, witty dialogue & high quality art but with none of the continuity. Having read this, I wish Whedon had relaunched Fray instead of Buffy. Hopefully, following Buffy’s success he will.

2. Terror Inc. - A rare example of dark and ultra-violent and yet fun, and a good use of a C- or D-level property in the MAX imprint. Gives me hope for the upcoming Foolkiller mini. Here’s the bummer… it’s already sold out at Diamond, so it might be tough to find. I know we’re out (or we have one copy left) at the store, and I suspect we ordered higher than many shops on this one.

3. The Highwaymen - The mystery of the lead girl revealed, more great action sequences, excellent stuff

4. The Flash - Not wild about Acuna’s art, and I can see where this wouldn’t hit for some, but I think that Waid just *nails* the basics of being parents, and makes it fun family superheroics at the same time. I don’t know if my enthusiasm will last, but for right now, and on a lighter week, it makes the top five.

5. Narcoleptic Sunday - Fun crime noir/suspense from Jeremy Haun and new artist discovery Brian Koschak.

As for Booster Gold, I found the first part almost unreadable, chock-ful of the kind of over-continuity I’ve come to expect from Johns’s DC books, but I did enjoy the setup in the last 1/3 of the book. Then I disliked the “previews of the future” last page that I thought was cheesy in Justice Society as well. I have a fondness for the original Booster Gold series by Jurgens, but I don’t think anybody else seems to know how to write the character as well as his creator.

2. Booster Gold - Surprised no one had this on their list after it got some love on Wednesday. I was skeptical going in but found a fun read that I am actually now really looking forward to.

only got 3 books and booster gold was my favorite of them all.

I dug Booster, it would have been my #5 pick if I hadn’t read Gon at the last minute before this post went up.

Nick, Dan and Randy … I couldn’t agree more on “Terror, Inc.” Definitely tickled me in all the right ways. Can’t believe how that book flew under so many radars, but it’s well-worth seeking out.

I’d also tout the new “Spider-Man Family” issue, if it didn’t have such a steep price. I loves me some Agents of Atlas, but I really didn’t need all those reprints. Especially since I have that “Mary Jane” issue and that “Amazing Spider-Man” one.

Yeah, the reprints (which are well chosen, if you don’t have them) do bulk the book up to a pretty hefty price, but no worries- I believe there is a trade of just the original stuff coming along in the next few months for people who haven’t wanted to pay for the whole package.
