What is Rumble Pants? Well, the Panteon has decided to play at god once more. We take a few select comic characters and pit them against one another for our amusement, but we figured why keep the fun all to ourselves? So we decided on a format that would require your participation and will hopefully provide amusement for you at the same time. The format is a single elimination tournament with weekly rounds decided by you, the reader. Just keep reading to help decide the ultimate fate of some of your favorite comic characters!

Welcome to Manga Zubon, where I take a look at the manga that have come out each month and pick what I think are the best of the lot. These are the manga that I feel deserve recognition and readership more than the rest, so I’m singling them out. My focus in this column is mostly on first volumes to get you in on the ground floor of new series, but I will include standouts in ongoing series as well. Keep in mind that though I do my best, I can’t read everything that comes out each month, so if you have something Continue Reading »

Down the Line is our monthly look at Previews, and what titles are coming out a few months, well, “down the line.”
This installment covers the October Previews for comics due to ship out in December 2007. Remember, especially with the indy books, that pre-ordering is your friend, and the best way to make sure you get the books you want. I should mention, thanks to the increasing prevalence of advance solicitation, that several of the books here won’t actually ship until 2008, but the pre-orders are still due by the end of October. Some of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: John McCrea
Company: DC Comics
When Garth Ennis writes superheroes, his instinct is to take the piss out of ‘em - sometimes by taking a piss on them. That was literally the case in an issue of Hellblazer he wrote where a drunken John Constantine accidentally took a leak on the Phantom Stranger’s boots. Then there was the time Ennis had the Punisher blow Wolverine’s ‘nads off. And back in the 90s when Hitman was being published, he even had his titular character spew chunks on Batman.
Bit of a schoolboy, that Garth.

Wednesday Number Ones is a weekly feature here at Comic Pants. We take the books that are premiering a first issue from that week and give a quick opinion on them. From time to time we may also include more than issue number ones in this feature. If a noteworthy one-shot or the first issue of a new story arc is released, we may talk about it in this feature.
This week we will cover Demons Of Mercy #1, Immortal Iron Fist Annual #1, Justice League Of America #13, Punisher MAX Annual #1, and Uncle Sam And The Freedom Fighters #1.

This week, Dave Farabee rejoins the Panteon (while D3 takes a couple weeks off) and we’re focusing in on a slightly more serious subject, talking about the recent events in Connecticut surrounding an issue of Eightball, a high school freshman and a well-liked teacher. It’s quite the controversy, as you can see by the 200+ comment thread on The Beat, and the Pants guys weigh in with their take, and the various larger issues about free speech, comics as literature, teens and comics and such that are raised by the event.

Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Daniel Acuna
Company: DC Comics
It’s impossible to argue the point that writer Mark Waid has the art of writing an extraordinary superhero comic book down pat, as it’s something that he does with ease and flair on a regular basis. One can only imagine how hard it is to write your basic good versus evil battle time and time again, while at the same time still making it seem different and just as enjoyable as the last. This above all else is something that Waid does perfectly here in the pages of The Flash. At its core, this is a traditional comic. There’s a group of villains, a hero (or heroes, as is the case), an overall conflict, action and an Continue Reading »
