Rumble Pants VI: Sweet Sixteen

logo.jpgWhat is Rumble Pants? Well, the Panteon has decided to play at god once more. We take a few select comic characters and pit them against one another for our amusement, but we figured why keep the fun all to ourselves? So we decided on a format that would require your participation and will hopefully provide amusement for you at the same time. The format is a single elimination tournament with weekly rounds decided by you, the reader. Just keep reading to help decide the ultimate fate of some of your favorite comic characters!

The overall champ from the last bracket was Hellboy, with a margin of about 60 votes! And now it’s time for an all new bracket.

As always, we’re starting at the Sweet Sixteen stage. This time out, it’s another theme match-up, as some of the best known supporting cast members of DC and Marvel go head-to-head. It’s up to you whether you want to think of this as a showdown in their areas of expertise (a butler-off by Alfred and Jarvis, dueling editorials from Jonah & Perry) or if you want to imagine them throwing down in fights.

As always, though, it isn’t just about who would be most likely win in each fight; it’s about who you want to win each fight and advance to the next round. Click the bracket thumbnail above to the side to see how the tournament has progressed so far. These polls will close just after midnight on Sunday, September 30th.

Each bout is either a landslide or neck and neck. If Alfred gets hurt, he can stitch himself back up-he’s crafty like that. Hopefully Gordon goes all the way. To me, he’s the most valuable supporting character in all of mainstream comics and his role in Year One proves he is one badass.

My voting was totally based on my love of Marvel vs. my love of Batman….it was Marvel all the way except for the Batman characters! :) And also Jimmy Olsen, for some reason I picked him over Rick Jones….

Is it just me, or do all the Marvel characters here just look much more iconic and cool? The DC ones could be anyone….aside from Gordon and Alfred of course! :D

  5. The real surprise is how close Waller/Gyrich is. JJJ vs. Gordon for the finals!

As for the DC characters, Lois is pretty iconic and Waller is a standout secondary character. She was featured in JLU & everything. Does Rick Jones really pop to anyone?

weird, i’m more of a marvel boy, but i found myself voting dc in all but the last two match-ups. i guess all the rapes and murders have toughened up their supporting players ;)

Sorry, not buying the JJJ beating Perry White deal. White would wipe the floor with that little mudslinging cowardly pencilneck. Plus, Perry’s a real newspaperman, so he’d kick JJJ’s ass, then write a pulitzer prize-winning story about it.

Oh, and The Wall would snap Gyrich like a twig.

    Wall, Wall, Wall…

Other than this mini-series of Suicide Squad, is Waller a part of the current continuity of DC? I don’t read a ton of DC but I never see her in anything. The only non-SS/Spy book was back when I read her in the cool JLI where she was called in to deprogram Blue Beetle. Was she in Crisis or anything? She was always such a fun force of nature. I liked her in the JLU series, from time to time, too.

Waller has been appearing regularly in Checkmate.

I feel bad for Jarvis. I’d much rather have him as a butler than Alfred. He’s always making sandwiches and cookies while Alfred just keeps sticking his nose in Bruce’s beeswax.

Captain Stacy is dead…so are his chances. “Jimmy” Olsen..he is older that Captain America and still call him “Jimmy”, Superman’s Pal. Rick Jones was a sidekick, with Hulk, Captain America and Marvel. Rick Rules.

Gwen Stacy and MJ have a lot more character than LL & LL (who like “Jimmy” been around forever).

Pennyworth not only worth the “Suit”, but kicked @$$ while doing it. Jarvis couldn’t keep the vacuum salesman from invading the Mansion.

    J. Jonah Jameson was so ahead of the curve as news publisher. Forget the “Truth”, lies make better stories. Great Caesar’s Ghost!! (’Nuff Said)

Gyrich was government before we all knew, that he was REALLY government. How the hell is Waller? Is that the chick suing Isiah?

WHo the hell has voted for jarvis over pennyworth? it should be Alfred 100%! ANyways it seems their is an anti superman thing on this site. Ya JJ is better then perry, but Rick JOnes over Olsen….give me a break. If he died next week Marvel wouldn’t even bother to hype it. MJ and GS are more understandable, even though I like both LL’s better.

I guess it’s hard to argue here, since it’s basically a popularity contest. That said, Lois would put Mary Jane through the wall without breaking a sweat. (I’m embracing my inner fanboy.)

I don’t even know who Foggy Nelson is and I voted him over Snapper Carr.

Oh Snap! (Or not, as the case may be.)

Sorry, not buying the JJJ beating Perry White deal. White would wipe the floor with that little mudslinging cowardly pencilneck. Plus, Perry’s a real newspaperman, so he’d kick JJJ’s ass, then write a pulitzer prize-winning story about it.

OK, I voted for JJJ on the basis of a stronger, more interesting personality… but you make a damn good argument. :)

Pennyworth not only worth the “Suit”, but kicked @$$ while doing it. Jarvis couldn’t keep the vacuum salesman from invading the Mansion.

He did fight demons in the street with only an umbrella, though. While limping and sporting an eye-patch, no less. Jarvis can hold his own.

That said, I voted for Alfred.

How the hell is Waller? Is that the chick suing Isiah?

Clearly, *somebody* needs a Showcase Presents Suicide Squad, stat. Too bad DC f*#%^king canceled it. At any rate, Waller is a fantastic supporting character who could easily stand up to Gyrich. Find some Suicide Squad, you won’t regret it.

Anyways it seems their is an anti superman thing on this site.

Nah, just an anti-DC bias. ;)

Ya JJ is better then perry, but Rick JOnes over Olsen….give me a break. If he died next week Marvel wouldn’t even bother to hype it.

C’mon… Olsen’s just annoying and goofy. Rick Jones is goofy but in that sort of hipster cool way. If it were high school, they’d both be outcasts, but Rick would be the guy getting stoned under the bleachers and under-achieving, and Olsen would be getting straight As and wedgies.

Rick Jones wins for me on the basis of Paul Benjamin’s take in Marvel Adventures Hulk and Peter David’s take on him in the pages of Hulk and Captain Marvel.

As for Snapper Carr, he’s the poor man’s DC version of Rick Jones, an annoying hipster who snaps his fingers a lot and was the sidekick of the Justice League in their early days. He’s the comic book version of Wendy & Marvin or the Wonder Twins, and he’s *exactly* as lame as that sounds.

For a while during Invasion, he had superpowers where he could snap his fingers and teleport. For real.

Yeah, Lois and Lana are pretty iconic, but in terms of character design, MJ and Gwen, for example, have a more iconic ‘look’ I think…you’d recognise them anywhere…some of the DC characters look kind of anonymous.

Though, I would agree with you on Waller, I only have 1 issue that shes in (some old Suicide Squad issue I found in backissue bins) and just from that, I thought she was cool!

I voted for Jarvis. I think Alfred is cool, but Jarvis is just a nice old man. He saved his mom from a bully in Avengers 201.

What the heck, he’s a nostalgic pick.

  26. Alfred Pennyworth vs. Edwin Jarvis
That one’s a no-brainer. Years in the British secret service make this no contest.

    J. Jonah Jameson vs. Perry White
Perry White actually served in WWII. Whereas JJJ was merely a war correspondent. No guns, no combat training, no nothing. Plus, Perry grew up in Suicide Slum! How in the world could he possibly lose to JJJ?

Lois Lane vs. Mary Jane Watson-Parker
Lois is the daughter of an Army general! She grew up base hopping, and had to learn how to defend herself from an early age.
Whereas MJ’s skills stop at the end of a runway.
Lois would put MJ through a wall in two seconds flat. No question!

    Lana Lang vs. Gwen Stacy
As the daughter of a police captain, Gwen must have picked up something over the years. As opposed to Lana.
    Stacy by decision.

Captain Jim Gordon vs. Captain George Stacy
Yeah, no contest here. Gordon is BADASS.

Amanda Waller vs. Henry Peter Gyrich
Waller scares Batman!!! Batman!!! Yeah, again, no contest.

    Foggy Nelson vs. Snapper Carr
Much as I dislike Snapper, he does have superpowers. As opposed to being a tubby bowl of lard like Foggy. I can’t believe he’s not winning here!

    Rick Jones vs. Jimmy Olsen
Although Rick may be the perennial sidekick, he’s usually been relegated to wallflower status during actual battles. Whereas Jimmy Olsen has frickin’ superpowers!!
Close fight, but in the end it’s Olsen by a knockout.

I predict Jim Gordon vs. Alfred Pennyworth. They’ve had some excellent portrails over the years in their various forms, like the films and the animated series. Short and brief portrails, but they did provide solid support and character development, good foils for Gotham City’s elite.

Rick Jones was the best part of Peter David’s Captain Marvel. His antics are what kept me reading it.
