Some of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

This week, Randy Lander, Dave Farabee, Nick Budd, David Martindale (D3) and Dan Grendell sit down to talk about “comfort food” comics. Which of the Panteon almost never re-reads his comics? Which one reads them over again all the time? What are some of the comic books that keep them coming back over and over again to reread? What’s the preferred form for re-reading: single issues or collections? These questions and many more are discussed in this podcast.
As always, commentary is welcomed and encouraged. Let us know what you thought of the podcast, and if you have suggestions for future podcast topics, leave us a comment or write in to the show! Please drop us a line to give us some questions or comments for the next show.

What is Rumble Pants? Well, the Panteon has decided to play at god once more. We take a few select comic characters and pit them against one another for our amusement, but we figured why keep the fun all to ourselves? So we decided on a format that would require your participation and will hopefully provide amusement for you at the same time. The format is a single elimination tournament with weekly rounds decided by you, the reader. Just keep reading to help decide the ultimate fate of some of your favorite comic characters!

Writers: Dan Abnett & Ian Edginton
Artists: Greg Boychuk, Lui Antonio, Daniel Lapham & Kevin Chin
Company: Boom! Studios
In my review of the first issue of this book, I summed it up as “painted art, a lot of imaginative gory visuals and concepts and characters who seem like they escaped from Jack Kirby’s mind when he was tripping heavy on steroids and meth.” Though my reaction to the stories warmed when I saw the whole arc collected in this trade, I stand behind that description, but I don’t necessarily mean it as a pejorative. Damnation Crusade is about as true a translation of the Warhammer 40K universe as you’re likely to find, which makes sense given that writers Abnett & Edginton have handled their fair share of Continue Reading »

I’m always on the lookout for a book that combines the supernatural with some other genre well. Standouts like Sandman and Grendel, where elements of the supernatural are used to help tell a greater story, are a favorite, but things like Hellboy and The Damned are great too. From what I can tell, Redball 6 falls more into the latter category, and that’s not a bad place to be. The Miller brothers have a good hook here, one that gives them a bit of freshness and makes me want to read more, and that’s also a good thing.
