Rumble Pants VII: Sweet Sixteen
What is Rumble Pants? Well, the Panteon has decided to play at god once more. We take a few select comic characters and pit them against one another for our amusement, but we figured why keep the fun all to ourselves? So we decided on a format that would require your participation and will hopefully provide amusement for you at the same time. The format is a single elimination tournament with weekly rounds decided by you, the reader. Just keep reading to help decide the ultimate fate of some of your favorite comic characters!
The overall champ from the last bracket was Jim Gordon, with a slim margin of about 25 votes! And now it’s time for an all new bracket.
As always, we’re starting at the Sweet Sixteen stage. This time out, it’s the cosmic round! The big guns of the DC and Marvel Universes, usually from outer space but occasionally Earth-bound, will face off across four rounds. We’ve got Heralds of Galactus, Scions of Darkseid, champions of whole races and even a planet or two facing off.
As always, though, it isn’t just about who would be most likely win in each fight; it’s about who you want to win each fight and advance to the next round. Click the bracket thumbnail above to the side to see how the tournament has progressed so far. These polls will close just after midnight on Sunday, October 21st.

Except for Firestorm I went Marvel all the way, never a big fan of cosmic heroes for some reason though I have been enjoying Nova.

QuoteI love Drax since the revamp, but I never would have imagined he’d beat Mongul - who can go toe to toe with Superman no less. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

QuoteI’m thinking we’re going to see GL vs. Sinestro in the finals.
15 Oct 2007 at 10:26 am
QuoteThat’s wierd. The only one that matched my vote is the Mogo v. Ego thing. I was in the minority in all the others.
GL v. SS is going to be interesting.

QuoteI love me some cosmic heroes, and I also voted all Marvel - except for Firestorm.
I’ve always like Marvel’s various outer space sagas, but haven’t been able to make much sense of DC’s cosmic characters. The various different titles that used space - Green Lantern, the Fourth World titles, Hawkman, LSH… they never seemed to agree with each other. And that’s without bringing the Space Cabby into it.

QuoteI can’t believe Green Lantern is losing. We can’t have Silver Surfer vs. Sinestro.
15 Oct 2007 at 1:35 pm
QuoteActually I’d quite want to see Green Lantern Vs Nova.
I’d actually vote Nova because I’d want him to win. I love that series and Abnett has made me a fan of that character.
Who’d have thought?

QuoteI voted Marvel all the way. Evidently I am a huge fanboy and part of the problem. I need to be stopped before I strike again! Here’s hoping Nova goes all the way!

QuoteAs I voted all but one of my votes were winning rather nicely;
Sinestro, I like SuperSkrull when written well, but Sinestro of current status would slice and dice him.
Mogo, I hate Ego, just dislike the big ugly planet.
Drax totally destroyed Thanos so I think he could handle Mongul.
Ronan can take Kalibak easily, I mean how many low level DCU people have beat the snot out of him?
Picked Nova, but was surprised. I figured the Orion fans would have been more in this category. Love the old bucket head.
This was the hardest, I went Capt. Marvel more out of nostalgia than anything else.
Your best pairing was GL and Silver Surfer. I had to take some time, but GL won out. Seems I am behind the curve here as it is the only one that was not leading when I voted. This was a great shock near the end.
Firestorm, his powers trump Firelord’s. That was almost anti-climatic after the GL/SS match.
Well done with this one guys. Truly a field that will test the voters as it narrows.

Quote*sob* Poor Fourth World characters. Orion and Nova should be a closer fight.
As for Drax beating Mongul, I have to agree. He killed Thanos quite easily. Mongul would be a walk in the park in comparison.

QuoteWouldn’t it have been more appropriate to have Nova vs. Green Lantern since Nova is a direct rip off of GL (I am told, anyway)? Human enrolled in a space cop program to protect the universe sort of deal? I’d have still picked Nova, though. His current stuff is just too strong. Glad Surfer is winning, too. His story is far too original and tragic. In fact, it seems like Marvel, especially lately, has really hit cosmic storylines out of the park compared to their comrades in the DCU.
Sad to see Skrull losing but really, of his recent stories none have been as good as his original Annihilation Mini and when they brought him back, he wasn’t nearly as cool. That said, if it were Xavin Super Skrull…well, I would still have voted for him.

Quotevote SUPER-SKRULL the most underrated of Marvels
16 Oct 2007 at 3:23 pm
QuoteI have to say, I’m a sucker for the cosmic characters. Even when we were coming up with all of these match-ups, I knew I’d have the hardest time with this one.
Super-Skrull vs. Sinestro —-Sinestro. Honestly, I like both of them quite a bit but the way Sinestro has been portrayed lately, I’m just liking him more and more. There was an issue of the Sinestro Corps that had him dealing with the Lantern (can’t remember her name) on his own homeworld and the meeting was surprisingly awesome.
Ego vs. Mogo —- Mogo. I love the character and really, Jeff Parker made me love him more with his issue of Marvel Adventures Avengers.
Drax vs. Mongul —–Drax, hands down.
Ronan vs. Kalibak —Kalibak. I like them both but Kalibak is just a personal favorite of mine.
Nova vs. Orion —Nova. Another match-up that I like both of the fighters but Nova just has been kicking ass lately.
Captain Atom vs. Captain Marvel —-Captain Marvel. This guy’s just tough to beat.
Green Lantern vs. Silver Surfer —- Green Lantern. Probably the toughest fight for me but Hal Jordan has always been one of my favorite characters and it feels like I would be betraying my inner fanboy if I voted for anyone else.
Firestorm vs. Firelord —- Firelord. Herald of Galactus and made a total badass in the pages of the last Annihilation event.
16 Oct 2007 at 5:26 pm
QuoteMost of these matchups were hard for me. The only two I was sort of ambivalent towards were Nova/Orion and Firestorm/Firelord. In both cases I went with the DC picks, but I haven’t read the various Annihilation events. I get the feeling if I had, I would have gone the other way on those.

QuoteWow, that Green Lantern/Silver Surfer is going to be a nail-biter. I’ve already seen it change three times, which is unusual. My votes:
1. Sinestro - Yeah, Super Skrull’s a badass and all, but Sinestro has gone toe-to-toe with the whole Green Lantern Corps.
2. Ego - Mogo’s more powerful, but Ego is just cool. And he’s fought Thor and romanced the Earth.
3. Drax - Because despite his presence in Alan Moore’s “For The Man Who Has Everything,” I’ve always found Mongul to be an annoying character. I’m not even much of a Drax fan, I just hate Mongul.
4. Ronan - Because Kalibak is a whiny punk. Sorry, Nick… it’s true.
5. Nova - Because I’ve never much liked Orion, except when Kirby wrote him. And because I was a huge fan of Nova’s New Warriors incarnation and I am a huge fan of the Annihilation/Abnett & Lanning version.
6. Captain Marvel - This was a toss-up for me, as I kind of like both characters, but I just think Marvel’s got a little bit more power and skill.
7. Silver Surfer - Tough call, but I think the Surfer would take it. And also, I’d like to avoid a GL/Sinestro match-up in the finals, if only because it’s so predictable, and we’ve seen it before in the comics.
8. Firelord - Because he’s got the power cosmic, and Firelord doesn’t. But I’m still kinda happy Firestorm is winning, actually, because I like him better as a character.

QuoteRandy, Randy, Randy. Buddy. C’mon, if you like Firestorm better than Firelord, then you should pick Firestorm over Firelord. Cripes! At the top of the voting it even says, “As always, though, it isn’t just about who would be most likely win in each fight; it’s about who you want to win each fight and advance to the next round.” I mean, you went with your heart and picked Ego over Mogo.
17 Oct 2007 at 6:51 pm
QuoteAnyways, Firelord would lose. I mean, come on! He’s been trounced by Spider-Man! What a pussy.

QuoteDood! Great concept for a Rumble Pants! Given the toe-to-toe smash interstellar storylines that are out now (Sinestro Corps War and Annihilation) this is a stroke of genius. Kudos to you guys!
