Top Five Fridays 11/23/07

top5.jpgSome of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

Also, just as the Wednesday Number Ones feature is generally our spot for folks to talk about the comics of the week, we hope that Top Five Fridays is where you’ll come to talk about what’s going on in comics in general. News in the comics world, thoughts on comics you’ve recently read, talk about comic-related movies that release this weekend and more are welcome in the comments thread for Top Five Fridays.

Cool, what happens in the Iron Man Annual I wonder?

  2. Surprised to see Captain America getting so little love. That book, plus Immortal Iron Fist, are always guaranteed to make me smile. Even when the title character is being killed off …

And did no one read either Flink, the new Doug TenNapel GN or The Goon: Chinatown? Both were terrific, I thought, as was the new Action Comics. And I’m not even a big DC fan …

  3. I’ve put any literature buying (both novel & comic) on hold for the moment, as I want to read what I have now before moving on. Unfortunately, I’ve built up a bit of a library of things I need to read.

What sucks it that, of course, the latest Kirby Fourth World book has to come out the week that I make this decision. Glad to see so many people have it in their top five this week, though. I’ve been loving the books and can’t wait to get the remainder.

And of course, DC has to continue to entice me with announcing not only the original OMAC stuff (is Kirby’s Sandman and/or Demon next? I hope!), but the Starman Omnibuses (Omnibi?) AND soon to announce Grant Morrison’s JLA.

Damnit, my wallet’s going to take a beating in 2008.

I also enjoyed the Iron Man Annual. I’m so glad it had Iron Man going after the baddies instead of “blah, blah… register or you will be arrested… blah, blah”.

    1. Courtney Crumrin and the Fire Thief’s Tale - A great take on werewolves, and another fine Courtney tale. I didn’t get a chance to read it last week, so it’s my pick of this week.

    2. The Spirit - Great issue from Darwyn Cooke, with some nice stuff on his enemy Mortez

    3. Grendel Behold the Devil - As I said in my Wednesday Number Ones, Matt Wagner returns to his character with great style

    4. American Virgin Vol 3: Wet - Really enjoyed re-reading this one, I’ll miss the series when it’s gone

    5. Iron Man Director of SHIELD Annual - Tony Stark goes undercover (sans IM armor) in Madripoor with three hot SHIELD agents for backup, and fights old Wolverine foes while trying to depose their corrupt leader. Best Iron Man story in a long time.

    6. Captain America - Some great Winter Soldier/Sharon Carter stuff, and a big tipping point towards #34, the new Captain America issue.

    7. Angel: After the Fall - Covered this one in a full review

    8. Invincible - Another of those “lots of stuff ongoing” issues, good for the regular readers

    9. Midknight - Married couple superheroics from Red 5, the guys who publish Neozoic, Atomic Robo and Abyss… I really like this company

    10. Brave and the Bold - Flash and Doom Patrol, great take on both by Waid and Perez. Still not sold on the new Flash family, but this was a really fun issue

    11. Hawaiian Dick - Scott Chantler’s art looks great, the setting and characters are unusual… lots of fun

    12. Umbrella Academy - I honestly don’t have any idea what’s happening, most of the time… but the art is great and the story is fun. Looking forward to reading the collected series and finding out if it’s a good story or just a fun, pretty story.

I’ve gotten kind of tired of TenNapel’s stuff, honestly. The Goon: Chinatown I’m looking forward to, but it was a busy enough week that I’m holding off until next week to pick it up.

I had a little, too, especially after “Black Cherry,” which I thought was awful. But this is more reminiscent of “Tommysaurus Rex.” It had a lot of charm, I thought.

And “Chinatown” was definitely worth the long wait! ;)

I like those kids and I’m digging this whole The Incredibles vibe thing that’s going on. I hope they will stick with Flash and Linda for a while. I pray that after Waid’s run and the new writer, oh let’s say, for example, Judd Winick does not get to write them so he can kill them off. :D

re: Starman Omnibus collections — it’s pretty rare, if not unprecedented, that a $49.99 item goes on my regular pull list, but this is a no-brainer. the one good thing to emerge from Zero Hour. who thought making Dr. Fate a Cable look-a-like was a strong concept? ugh. oh, the edginess of calling him simply “Fate.”

November has been an amazing month of comics. At least 5 great reads every week and I’ve only read about 75% of the stuff I picked up

    1. The Nocturnals Vol 1 HC - Didn’t get a chance to read this when it first came out, nor did I have the money for it, but a week later and this thing proved to be one of the most enjoyable reads I’ve had in awhile. I read the Black Planet story awhile back but the other two that this HC encompasses are just as good. Brereton’s work is just that good. Can’t wait for more of these volumes

    2. Hawaiian Dick - I’m a big fan of this series in general and when you add such an amazing artist onto the book, a person like Scott Chantler, then you really have a book that you can’t miss. Plus, I just like the feel that this book carries. It’s unlike anything else out there.

    3. Captain America - Never fails to entertain. Brubaker and Epting continue to provide an adventure that somehow just keeps getting better.

    4. The Spirit - Best Spirit issue that we’ve seen lately. I’m a little sad that we’ve only got one more issue with Cooke and J. Bone but it’s been a blast none the less.

    5. Umbrella Academy - The art with this one really grabs me most but the story, while a little off the wall and hard to follow, seems like it will hold up on its own. One of the best surprise books of the year.

    6. Incredible Hulk - Just a good issue that continues to use the odd Renegades team well. Sign me up for one of those people who can’t wait for Incredible Herc.

    7. Iron Man Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Christos Gage knows how to write superheroes, plain and simple. And anyone who uses people like Bloodscream and Roughhouse in a cool way…Well, you get a gold star for that and providing a rare Iron Man story that’s actually worth reading.

    8. Ex Machina - Finally caught up on this book and was reminded as to why I think this truly is BKV’s best book to date. The characters are so well realized and the story so engrossing and satisfying that you can’t help but be entertained. Also, having Tony Harris on art doesn’t hurt either.

    9. Angel: After the Fall - Like I said in the Wednesday #1’s, this one was good. I still have a few issues with the coloring but overall this one was a nice continuation of the television series with several moments that made me go, “WTF.”

    10. Thunderbolts: Breaking Point - In no way does it compare to what Ellis is doing on the book but Gage and Denham do a cool little story that focuses on one of my favorite characters, Songbird.

    11. Brave and the Bold - Waid’s still going strong with this one. I especially took much joy in the quality B horror movie vibe that was thrown into the Flash meets the Doom Patrol.

    12. Scream - A good Peter David story with an interesting concept and some enjoyable art by Sears.

Hey, Just cause there’s no thread for the poll, doesn’t mean I can’t post on it right? I think DDP should definitely keep the Joe comic license. I know Marvel’s leading but I have to wonder how many of those people that voted for Marvel to get it have read a Joe comic (or any comic that’s not Marvel) since 1989? Personally I think it’d be a travesty if ANYONE but DDP got the license ESPECIALLY MARVEL. Can you imagine the snail-paced overly artsy-fartsy, overly political crap that a modern-day Marvel G.I. Joe comic would be? I can. And it sucks pretty hard. I mean Hama’s working for DDP nowadays for f&$k’s sake!

    Anyways to be in topic:

    My Top Five:
    Sword
    Y The Last Man
    Dynamo 5
    Hellblazer
    G.I. Joe
