Top Five Fridays 12/21/07

top5.jpgSome of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

Also, just as the Wednesday Number Ones feature is generally our spot for folks to talk about the comics of the week, we hope that Top Five Fridays is where you’ll come to talk about what’s going on in comics in general. News in the comics world, thoughts on comics you’ve recently read, talk about comic-related movies that release this weekend and more are welcome in the comments thread for Top Five Fridays.

    4. Terror, Inc.
    5. Marvel Holiday Special

Happy to see both “The Order” and “Incredible Hulk” getting so much love. The former had a terrific ending, while both the story and art in the new Herc-and-Cho title were pleasant surprises. Good stuff.

Pretty decent week for me, although I’ve been too busy to read everything.

    1. The Escapists HC - I haven’t actually sat down to reread this, but I know that it’s awesome. Maybe my favorite Brian Vaughan work ever.

    2. Incredible Hulk - First issue of “The Incredible Herc” by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, and I hope they never leave, and if they do, I hope it’s to a new series with Herc, Amadeus Cho and the Renegades.

    3. The Order - One of the best new superhero books of the year, another great issue.

    4. X-Men First Class - Now in proper order! And it’s the fun first part of a two-parter… I’ve read the second part thanks to the magic of First Look books, and it’s great as well. So expect to see this one on the Top Five list next week.

    5. Robotika For A Few Rubles More - Beautiful art, weird concepts, great action… if you dig Shaolin Cowboy but wish it came out more than once a year or so, check out Robotika.

    6. Angel After The Fall - Liked the second issue quite a bit, can’t say much without spoiling it.

    7. Immortal Iron Fist - More kung-fu awesomeness and it’s great to see the Heroes for Hire reunited with Misty and Colleen in stories I actually like.

    8. Batman and the Outsiders - Kind of a fun straight-up team book, with very nice art.

    9. Naoki Urasawas Monster Vol 12 - I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet, I’ll read it as soon as I finish up…

    10. Action Philosophers Vol 3 Giant Sized Thing TP - Getting into some heady philosophy, but as always it’s fun and funny thanks to Van Lente and Dunlavey. Can’t wait to see their Comic Book Comics series next year!

    11. Umbrella Academy - Strange, doesn’t entirely make sense, but gorgeous art and imaginative ideas.

    12. Warbound - I’m not wholly invested in the characters, but the craft of writing and art is really strong, and I *am* interested in the setup in the last few pages.

Also need to read (but haven’t had the chance yet) Grendel: Behold the Devil #2, Munden’s Bar TP and Walking Dead Vol 3 HC, which all might have been on the Top Five.

Everybody have a Merry Christmas! Or if you don’t celebrate Christmas, a happy Tuesday. We’ll be back with Wednesday Number Ones on Friday next week (I know, it’s weird, blame Diamond) and maybe, I dunno… Top Five Sunday?

Happy holidays to everyone here. You guys — both the writers/podcasters and the regular commentators — really enrich the comic-book-reading experience, so cheers.

  8. Thanks for the kind words, Bob! I won’t speak for everyone else but I can say for myself that writing, podcasting, and producing whatever craziness that we happen to come up with for Comic Pants is something that I absolutely, postively, love to do and the commentors here really do enrich my experience of comics as well.

I hope that everyone has a happy and safe holiday!

Seriously, I’d be lost without this site. Thanks for the insight, the passion, the hard work, the increasingly bitter Bendis posts (I’m still a defender of sorts, but holy cow, I just read the New Avengers tpb where Elektra was exposed as a skrull, and that was some horrible, cracked out shite. What was that shit with Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch? “I need . . . closure. . .” Oy. I think you guys have him on the verge of a breakdown).

Anyway, thanks for creating and maintaining a great site.

    Hulk smash Christmas ornaments! Yawr!

Alright so it’s Christmas morning and I found Thunderbolts, Fear Agent, Scott Pilgrim, and Spider-man Loves Mary Jane under my tree. I’m holding you guys responsible for how merry my holiday is ;)

Oddly, I am OK with this. :)

Hope everybody had a happy holiday!

Btw, Chris? “Increasingly bitter” Bendis posts? I’d like to argue, but it’s so dead on. My Christmas present to myself is being OK with my bitterness towards modern day Marvel era Bendis. ;)

Haha. I feel sort of indebted to Bendis because Ultimate Spiderman is what got me back into comics after a three year layoff, but yeah, he’s not helping himself with New Avengers. Or really anything since (and especially including) Avengers Disassembled.

Anyway, whether it’s Bendis and Millar, or DC and its rape cliffhangers, your bitterness makes for quality reading.
