Top Five Fridays 1/11/08

top5.jpgSome of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

Down the Line: March 2008

Previews CoverWelcome to Down the Line, our monthly look at Previews! Co-written by Randy Lander and Dan Grendell, each Down the Line looks at what’s coming out in comics (and manga) a few months down the road.

This installment covers the January Previews for comics due to ship out in March 2008. Remember, especially with the indy books, that pre-ordering is your friend, and the best way to make sure you get the books you want. Thanks to the increasing prevalence of advance solicitation, that some of the books here won’t actually ship until April or later, but the pre-orders are still due by the end of January. This week, we will cover Amazing Spider-Man #546, BPRD 1946 #1 of 5, Evil Dead #1 of 4, Foundation #1 of 5, Hulk #1, Jason & The Argonauts Kingdom Of Hades #1 of 4, JLA Classified #50, Nightwing #140, North Wind #1 of 5, The Twelve #1 and Youngblood #1.

Hulk #1

Writer: Jeph Loeb
Artist: Ed McGuinness
Company: Marvel Comics

nov072150d.jpgRed Hulk? You’re kidding me. You’ve got to be kidding. Wait a minute, you’re not kidding? Oh, come on! Are they seriously doing this?

That was my basic, gut reaction to the news of this series, and the short answer is yes, they are in fact doing this. As to why they’re doing this or why it is they felt something like this was needed…Well, that’s something that even I can’t make heads or tails of. Maybe if there were an actual “magic” 8-Ball in which to peer into, the answer would be something more than a, “Reply hazy, try again,” or a Continue Reading »

Manga Zubon December 2007

manga_zubon.jpgWelcome to Manga Zubon, where I take a look at the manga that have come out each month and pick what I think are the best of the lot. These are the manga that I feel deserve recognition and readership more than the rest, so I’m singling them out. My focus in this column is mostly on first volumes to get you in on the ground floor of new series, but I will include standouts in ongoing series as well. Keep in mind that though I do my best, I can’t read everything that comes out each month, so if you have something you think I missed or just have something to say about the ones I’ve chosen, please chime in in the comments section.
