Rumble Pants XII: Championship

logo.jpgBy popular demand, Rumble Pants is back! What is Rumble Pants? Well, the Panteon has decided to play at god once more. We take a few select comic characters and pit them against one another for our amusement, but we figured why keep the fun all to ourselves? So we decided on a format that would require your participation and will hopefully provide amusement for you at the same time. The format is a single elimination tournament with weekly rounds decided by you, the reader. Just keep reading to help decide the ultimate fate of some of your favorite comic characters!

The big guns round is down to two… Spider-Man’s upset taking down the Man of Steel could not help him against the uber-Bat, and Ra’s Al Ghul may be immortal, but he still doesn’t really have enough power to take down the master of magnetism. And so it comes down to two: Batman and Magneto. Who will win? Well, according to Grant Morrison and Frank Miller, Batman. But it’s not up to them… it’s up to you!

Because as always, it isn’t just about who would be most likely win in each fight; it’s about who you want to win each fight and advance to the next round. Click the bracket thumbnail above to the side to see how the tournament has progressed so far. These polls will close just after midnight on Saturday, May 31st.

Magneto vs. Batman

  • Magneto (41%)

I think the only votes Magneto will get are pity votes (or Marvel Zombies).

  3. While I think - with only a few exceptions - that Batman being able to see (at least) five moves ahead in any match allows him to beat almost any of the heroes, the same rule doesn’t apply for the bigger villains. Magneto’s a character that really should only be taken out by a team of heroes. He’s just too smart and too powerful. Just like Doctor Doom or Darkseid for that matter. Unless Batman fights one of them at the Hadron Super Collider and has an amazingly powerful piece of technology at his disposal, there’s just no way to win on his own.

Can we see Batman vs Galactus next? I want to see just how far people are willing to take the “Batman beats everyone” philosophy.

Well, thankfully this is a battle of who people would WANT to win, not who WOULD win. In that case, Magneto would be winning hands down. Another scenario:

BATMAN: Take that, master of magnetism! (throws metal batarangs, which are deflected of course).
MAGNETO: Look, a passing 747. (grabs it and smashes it onto Batman’s pointy head).
    BATMAN: !

The next new Rumble Pants will be a pretty interesting challenge of the “Batman beats everyone” philosophy, I think. :)

And I voted for Magneto. Sorry, I know he’s Batman and all, but control of all electromagnetic forces and master villain status beats “guy who knows a lot of stuff.”

why does everyone complain batman always wins? Noone is complaining that iron man beat captain marvel or that spiderman beat superman or that kingpin beat vandal savage. Those are all just as unbelievable as batman beating magneto. In any case…I think vandal savage and Ras got robbed…….the whole can’t die thing really gives them an age over all the characters.

Can’t die from natural aging… not much of an edge in a fight, where aging is the least likely thing to get you killed. :)

As for why folks are complaining about the Batman wins thing, I think it’s because Batman always winning is an extension of this thing where Batman is always right, Batman is always three steps ahead, Batman is always the smartest guy in the room, etc.

It’s a bit annoying, especially if Batman is not your favorite character, and maybe you’d like to see the know-it-all taken down a peg. :)

….well I guess I see your point….but batman is my favorite character so I don’t mind. But still noboyd complains when Dr.Doom, reed richards or lex luthor know everything……

perhaps aging is the least likely thing to get you killed, but if vandal savage just walked around with a nuclear bomb..and just set it off he would win….because he can walk away from that…admittedly thats a lame ass fight…..but thats beside the point.

We need an all Batman rumble pants. Adam West version, Val Kilmer version, Kevin Conroy version, George Clooney version, Michael Keaton version, Christian Bale version, three different Frank Miller takes (Year One, Dark Knight, All-Star), that more recent Batman cartoon, Terry McGuiness, Jean-Paul Valley, we could go on and on (and that’s mostly just versions outside of comics, you guys know his comic history better than me; I’m sure there are plenty of different “eras” of Batman to compare)…

No, he wouldn’t win, unless I’m wrong about Savage’s powers. But I’m pretty sure Vandal Savage is immortal in that he can’t die from normal aging, but he’s not invulnerable, at least as far as I know. He’s as tough and strong as your average caveman, that’s about it. If he sets off a nuclear bomb, he dies just like everybody else.

In fact there are at least 16 different Batman versions. And that’s all I’ll say until we unveil the next Rumble Pants round. :)

I think Batman vs. Wolverine…the most annoyingly ubiquitous characters from DC and Marvel… should duke it out. I think black hole would be created when two over-used characters who never lose fight.

It would be the never ending comic. Wolverine gets beat all the time, but he never loses because he just keeps getting back up. Batman would win every time. So it would be a race to see what happens first: Batman slips up (never happens) or Wolverine fails to recover (never happens).

Thus making it an ongoing series, Batman vs. Wolverine.

And we should get Jeph Loeb to write it, and Jim Lee to draw it, and each issue would be a new number one.

I believe that if Marvel and DC published this comic, it would be #1 on the sales charts every month it was published.

    I wish I was kidding.

  19. Wolverine is a funny charcter
You have your Superman/hulk types who can hit all day and don’t get hurt
your Batman/Flash Spider-man types who never get hit.
then you have your small group that need to get hurt so we can remark on how well they heal. So basicly Wolverine and Elmer fudd.

Whoa…Wolverine vs. Daffy Duck. They can both get sliced into pieces and fall into a pile of neatly cut steaks but a scene later are up and at ‘em. Sweet. New battle. Better yet, the hijinks of the smarter Bugs Bunny vs. Dr. Doom or Magneto. THERE is a real battle. “Nnnnext!”

Randy, I fear that by even bringing up an ongoing Batman vs. Wolverine series as you pointed out with Loeb and Lee now makes the odds of that happening increase to the point of breaking. I am going to guess it will be the year that both a Wolverine and Batman movie share screen time. (when is the new Wolvie movie? Will we see a Bats in time? Will they do a combo movie with both lead actors, like the Prestige but with claws and gadgets? Am I scared because the Prestige already plays out like Wolvie (can’t die!) vs. the Bats (master of disguise!)? Did you not see the movie and just read this?).

Based on the reviews of the site, it seems that the Panteon is sick of BatGod. But the site’s voters seem to support him. I wonder if the voters agree with frequent criticsm in the reviews of Batman. Thoughts, anyone?

I’ve bought Batman and Detective pretty religiously for about 20 years, and I buy it more to keep my collection complete right now. So, as a credentialed Bat-fan, I agree that his core books haven’t been great lately. But I enjoyed the recent Matt Wagner series and am looking forward to the movie this summer, so I haven’t given up on the character.

As an aside, I pay little attention to the larger DC super hero universe (JLA, Crisis, etc.). That seems to be the area that most annoys the Panteon, when it comes to Batman.

I’m calling it right here: The Animated Series Batman will win any theoretical/eventual all-bats Rumble Pants. Depending on the bracket setup, I could see it coming down to TAS vs. Adam West.

Actually, I’m a Batman fan… I just prefer a vulnerable Batman who actually faces challenges rather than someone who walks through any obstacle as if it didn’t concern him.

But I’m also kind of tired of Batman, having read a ton of stories with him over the past twenty years. So I prefer him in small doses, and right now there isn’t any Batman (save Batman and the Outsiders) that’s really holding my attention.

Does anyone recommend at all the Morrison/Batman books? I was thinking about getting Son of the demon and Death and the Maidens so I could read ressurection of Ra’s al Ghul.. And I’d like to take a shot at RIP but I won’t risk it without reading the rest because normally I have a really hard time reading DC core universe without wikipedia or some site analysing the issues lol

Batman kicks Mister Fantastic in the nuts

Mister Squealing Like a Mouse Fantastic drops to his knees grasping the Ultimate Nulifier like an Ultimate Pacifier

Batman throws a Batarang ™ into Mister Ouch My Friggin Balls Fantastic’s nerve cluster located at Mister Somebody Give Me an Icepac for my Brokesac Fantastic’s only other nonbendable juncture causing Bendy’s trigger finger to shoot the Nulifier

Reed “no balls” Richards and Gal “Square Purple Undies” actus both disappear.

Batman wins again. And, we all die a little bit inside.
