Top Five Fridays 5/16/08

top5.jpgSome of you may have noticed on the sidebar, we have our “Top Five of the Moment” listed. These are the five books that are most clicking with each Pants writer. It may or may not represent the best books we’ve read all month, year, or just what we’re digging that week. We generally try to update it with books from that week, but there are no hard and fast rules. Inspired by an email from one of our readers, we’re going to post every Friday with the most recent Top Five from each member of the Panteon, and hope for your comments on our lists, or maybe even your own “Top Five of the Moment.”

Secret Invasion Update #1

Secret Invasion Update is a weekly feature that among other things takes a gander at all things Skrully. More directly, we will be talking about the many issues of comics that tie into Marvel’s big summer blockbuster Secret Invasion. Is the series good? Which issues rock the house? Which ones bite the big one? Do you have to read everything that comes out to get the whole picture of the Invasion, or can you just read the main series and be fine? Those are the types of questions that we’ll be tackling with the gusto that you’ve come to expect from the Panteon.

This week we will be covering Secret Invasion #1 of 8, Mighty Avengers #12, New Avengers #40, Secret Invasion #2 of 8, and Mighty Avengers #13.

Warhammer: Condemned by Fire #1

Writers: Dan Abnett & Ian Edginton
Artist: Rahsan Ekedal
Company: Boom! Studios

Condemned by Fire #1Just as Abnett & Lanning have carved out a niche for themselves in the galactic side of the Marvel Universe, Abnett has teamed with Edginton to create a place within the Boom! Studios publishing house. That place? The war-torn, grim universes of Warhammer, both fantasy and sci-fi flavored. Condemned by Fire is the former, a Man With No Name meets Solomon Kane style adventure of a witch hunter who roams the land, using blade and black powder pistol on chaos cultists and undead and scaring the crap out of even those he’s sworn to protect. The story here is familiar, a “plays by his own rules” loner whose dogged pursuit of a fugitive leads him into a much Continue Reading »

We take a few select comic characters and pit them against one another for our amusement, but we figured why keep the fun all to ourselves? The format is a single elimination tournament with weekly rounds decided by you, the reader. Just keep reading to help decide the ultimate fate of some of your favorite comic characters!

Grab Your Ankles

position7.jpgIt’s that time again boys and girls. So, grab your ankles and prepare for impact. I’m updating the site software again to address a security hole in older versions of WordPress. The site, the RSS feeds, and the podcast will be in various states of usability throughout the day. Feel free to keep using the site during the process, but if something doesn’t work right, don’t come whining to me until the update is finished.

If you really need somebody to complain to, Contact your Congressman and let him know that your tax dollars would be better spent on improving comics related websites, like ours, than on corporate welfare.

***UPDATE: Site update should be finished, please report any problems in this thread***

Guardians of the Galaxy #1

Writers: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
Artist: Paul Pelletier
Company: Marvel Comics

gotgcov.jpgNick: In the immortal words of Bruce Willis, “Welcome to the party, Pal.” I say this because that is exactly what Guardians of the Galaxy is, a tremendous, action-packed extravaganza that pulsates with entertainment and style. Bold words, I know, but I don’t say them lightly.

Randy: I don’t want to oversell Guardians or set the bar too high, but it’s not exaggerating to say that this is a hell of a first issue. Using three narratives (two flashback and one present-day), Abnett, Lanning and Pelletier establish their characters, set up the raison d’etre of the team, foreshadow future events and feature a kickass Continue Reading »

Fat Pants April 2008

fat-pants.jpgFat Pants is a monthly Comic Pants feature (well, at least in theory it’s a monthly feature) in which I mull over the last month’s trades and graphic novels in order to let you know which ones I feel are most worth your attention. It is far from a comprehensive list of all the good reads published in the past month, so please feel free let us know in the comments which trades and graphic novels came out in the last month that you, the reader, feel are most worth our attention. So, without further ado, here are the books I think really stood out this month.
