Secret Invasion Update is a weekly feature that among other things takes a gander at all things Skrully. More directly, we will be talking about the many issues of comics that tie into Marvel’s big summer blockbuster Secret Invasion. Is the series good? Which issues rock the house? Which ones bite the big one? Do you have to read everything that comes out to get the whole picture of the Invasion, or can you just read the main series and be fine? Those are the types of questions that we’ll be tackling with the gusto that you’ve come to expect from the Panteon.
This week we will be covering Mighty Avengers #14, and Incredible Hercules #117.

Well the epic Messiah Complex crossover has concluded, and we’re moving into the Divided We Stand aftermath for the X-Universe, and I couldn’t be happier with Brubaker’s Uncanny X-Men and the way said aftermath is being handled in those pages. As exciting and as action-packed as Messiah Complex was, it did end on a somewhat depressing note. The X-Men were so demoralized and devastated by the end that even the moral compass of the team, Scott Summers, was ready to give up hope and walk away from Xavier’s dream in a manner very uncharacteristic to the leader of the X-Men.

Hey Doc, fire up the flux capacitor, and set course for 1992. We’ve got an epic-sized X-Men crossover that spans several books, creative teams, and months. It’s the first big X-Crossover in quite some time if you don’t count the abortive Endangered Species crossover that was really only a series of back-up stories. I feel reminded of the near constant X-Crossovers of the 90’s, and I’ve got to admit that I’m both exceptionally excited and nervous all at the same time. This could very well be what the X-Franchise needs to get kicked back into high gear and return to prominence, or it could very well be the latest installment in a long running pattern of overly hyped X-Crossovers that deliver little more than flashy covers. After reading an advance copy of the one-shot kicking off the event, I have more reason to feel confident… and more reason to be nervous.

Marvel’s initial Annihilation series and lead-in mini-series made for an exceptional action romp and turned out to be a sleeper hit for Marvel despite a notable lack of marketing. This time around Marvel’s marketing team seems to be on the ball, but the big question is, are the comics still good? If the prologue one-shot is any indicator, Annihilation: Conquest should end up being just as good as the original. The prologue issue achieves both an introduction to the conflict and introductions to the major players. It does so with both depth and excitement.

Fat Pants is a monthly Comic Pants feature in which we mull over the last month’s trades and graphic novels in order to let you know which ones we feel are most worth your attention. It is far from a comprehensive list of all the good reads to published in the past month, so please feel free let us know in the comments which trades and graphic novels came out in the last month that you, the reader, feel are most worth our attention. So, without further adieu, here are the books we think really stood out this month.

Alright, we’ve got a new feature here on Comic Pants. We figured we would mention some of the graphic novels and trades to come out in the past month that we feel are worth your attention, but we couldn’t figure out whether to call it “Waiting for the Trade” or “Fat Pants.” The former is obvious, and the latter denotes the larger size of trades compared to single issues. Our indecisiveness led us to leave the decision up to you, the reader! Anyways, here’s what we feel to be the trades/graphic novels most worth your time in February 2007 and maybe a few honorable mentions.
