What is a Short Pants Review? While we’d love to give full reviews to everything, there just isn’t enough time in the day. So we’ve come up with Short Pants as a way of providing capsule reviews from our varied review writers, giving quick hits and short capsule thoughts about various comics we’ve read recently.
This time out, Randy covers Batman and the Outsiders #8, Brave and the Bold #14, George RR Martin’s Wild Cards: Hard Call #3, Guardians of the Galaxy #2, Pilot Season Genius, RASL #2 and Warhammer: Condemned by Fire #2.

Fat Pants is a monthly Comic Pants feature (well, at least in theory it’s a monthly feature) in which I mull over the last month’s trades and graphic novels in order to let you know which ones I feel are most worth your attention. It is far from a comprehensive list of all the good reads published in the past month, so please feel free let us know in the comments which trades and graphic novels came out in the last month that you, the reader, feel are most worth our attention. So, without further ado, here are the books I think really stood out this month.

What is a Bell Bottom Pick? At Comic Pants, we love the new, but sometimes we get nostalgic to talk up an older book or series and remember some greatness from “back in the day.” That “day” could be the extreme ’90s, the socially relevant ’70s, or the guys-wore-hats ’50s. Who knows? All we can tell you is that a Bell Bottom Pick is worth rifling though back issue bins for or even braving the wilds of Ebay. Our latest “Bell Bottom Pick” is Hitman #1-60 (1996-2001).

Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: John McCrea
Company: DC Comics
When Garth Ennis writes superheroes, his instinct is to take the piss out of ‘em - sometimes by taking a piss on them. That was literally the case in an issue of Hellblazer he wrote where a drunken John Constantine accidentally took a leak on the Phantom Stranger’s boots. Then there was the time Ennis had the Punisher blow Wolverine’s ‘nads off. And back in the 90s when Hitman was being published, he even had his titular character spew chunks on Batman.
Bit of a schoolboy, that Garth.

Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Daniel Acuna
Company: DC Comics
It’s impossible to argue the point that writer Mark Waid has the art of writing an extraordinary superhero comic book down pat, as it’s something that he does with ease and flair on a regular basis. One can only imagine how hard it is to write your basic good versus evil battle time and time again, while at the same time still making it seem different and just as enjoyable as the last. This above all else is something that Waid does perfectly here in the pages of The Flash. At its core, this is a traditional comic. There’s a group of villains, a hero (or heroes, as is the case), an overall conflict, action and an Continue Reading »

Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: Andy Kubert
Company: DC Comics
Grant Morrison is one in a small handful of creators whose work is about as unpredictable and challenging as you can get. He’s a downright genius to some, constructing mountainous bodies of work that seduce and draw you in with their complex and psychedelic rhythms. But for others, he’s an utter confusion, falling into a stark category of too weird or too out there on the fringe to completely understand. He’s not your typical author, that’s for sure, certainly not one that does the same thing again and again, as he continually tries to do something different with what he gets his hands on. With his Continue Reading »
