What is a Short Pants Review? While we’d love to give full reviews to everything, there just isn’t enough time in the day. So we’ve come up with Short Pants as a way of providing capsule reviews from our varied review writers, giving quick hits and short capsule thoughts about various comics we’ve read recently.
This time out, Dave and Randy cover Conan the Cimmerian #0, BPRD: The Ectoplasmic Man, Hulk #4, Immortal Iron Fist #16, Indiana Jones Adventures Vol. 1 TP, Magdalena/Daredevil, Man With No Name #2, Pilot Season: Alibi, Thunderbolts #121, Transformers Spotlight: Wheelie and X-Men First Class Vol. 2 #13.

Writer: Mark Andrew Smith
Artist: Paul Maybury
Company: Image Comics
Aqua Leung is not, in fact, an appreciation of Jethro Tull. Instead, it is Image’s first What If? Specifically, What If Aquaman Was Completely Awesome? There’s a lot more to Aqua Leung than that, but if I had to sum it up in a nutshell, I’d say that Smith, Maybury and their cohorts in coloring, lettering and editing have finally created a cool aquatic superhero tale. Actually, even that’s not wholly accurate, because Aqua Leung has as much in common with the fantasy genre, and maybe a touch of sci-fi, as it does with superheroes. Aqua Leung is a thick tome of epic battles and bloodshed and prophecy, leavened with some hipster humor and loaded with action. And it’s clear that while there’s a ton that happens in this first volume, Smith and Maybury are in for the long haul and are starting a fantasy epic here. Continue Reading »

The anthology format in comics is full of promise and pitfalls. A wide range of creators and stories means you’re almost guaranteed to get as many big misses as big hits with any particular reader, and anything you like is probably going to feel too short, while anything you hate is going to feel like it’s taking up valuable space. And almost every single reader will have a different view on which one is which. And even the corporate superhero giants have trouble selling anthologies, so something non-superhero from another publisher is going to have a huge uphill battle. So why do folks keep making anthologies? Continue Reading »

Wednesday Number Ones is a weekly feature here at Comic Pants. We take the books that are premiering a first issue from that week and give a quick opinion on them. From time to time we may also include more than issue number ones in this feature. If a noteworthy one-shot or the first issue of a new story arc is released, we may talk about it in this feature.
This week we will cover Archibald Saves Christmas #1, Dan Dare #1, Dock Walloper #1, Gargoyles Bad Guys #1, Marvel Atlas #1, Mercenaries #1, and Zombie Simon Garth #1

What is a “Hot Pants” pick? Quite simply, it’s a book that all five reviewers on this site believe is worthy of your time. It may or may not be one of our favorite books, but it’s that rare breed of comic that struck all five of us, with our different tastes, as a good read. True Story, Swear To God is our latest “Hot Pants” pick.

Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Jason Howard
Company: Image Comics
After singlehandedly re-imagining the zombie genre with books like The Walking Dead and Marvel Zombies, it only seems natural that Robert Kirkman’s next topic of choice would tackle yet another of the major horror sub-genres: Werewolves. Now, for me, the first thing that comes to mind when mentioning werewolves are movies like American Werewolf in London, Silver Bullet, and…Dog Soldiers? Okay, maybe not the latter one but most certainly the others, splashed with a bit of Cycle of the Werewolf (the book Silver Bullet is based on) and a few scenes from the Continue Reading »

Writer: Jay Faerber
Artist: Mahmud A. Asrar
Company: Image Comics
Jay Faerber’s newest manifestation of the superhero team paradigm, found here in the pages of Dynamo 5, has the right to be compared to many things that have come before it in comic book history. It’s a team book of the highest fashion, fitting in with the likes of a hip Fantastic Four or Justice League of America that provides not only an abundance of thrilling action but also nails the group dynamic in a swanky and addictive fashion. So yes, Dynamo 5 can be compared to those things, can be put into the class of an excellent team book that everyone should give a shot…but for me, I equate the title to being like a really good Continue Reading »
